Special Exhibition Tour with Artist Britta Marakatt-Labba

Experience the exhibition On the Ugly and the Beautiful: Johan Turi, Outi Pieski, and Johanna Minde through the eyes of internationally renowned artist Britta Marakatt-Labba. Nature, people, reindeer, and reindeer herding are all part of an everyday life shared by Marakatt-Labba and Johan Turi. Through vivid depictions of landscapes inhabited by plants, animals, and people, both artists have offered insights into Sámi life, its history, and its conditions, from time immemorial to the present day.

There are also several points of connection between Marakatt-Labba and artist Outi Pieski, not least in relation to the ládjogáhpir, the traditional Sámi headdress that was once banned by the church. It appears frequently in Marakatt-Labba’s images: glowing red on heads emerging from behind trees, floating through the cosmos, or worn by people gathered around meeting tables. It becomes a symbol of the foremothers and their strength. The exhibition includes several horn caps collectively recreated by Pieski and her friends—as a way of reclaiming agency over Sámi tradition and history.
